History of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.

The origins of 100 Black Men of America are found in the dedication of a few distinguished men, who came together in New York in 1963 to empower African American and minority communities, invest in youth development, and dispel negative images of African American men.  Among these founders of the modern day 100 Black Men of America movement were the Honorable David Dinkins (former Mayor of New York), Andrew Hatcher (Associate Press Secretary to President John F. Kennedy), The Honorable Livingston Wingate (New York State Supreme Court Justice), and William Hayling, M.D. (Founding President). These men, along with several others, determined that a unified body, representing interests across business, government, academia, and other fields would be best positioned to address the complex issues confronting their communities during the turbulent times of the 1960s.

One decade after working to organize the 100 Black Men of New York, Dr. Hayling extended this concept to establish a second, 100 Black Men organization in neighboring New Jersey.  At the end of a decade-long period of expansion, nine total 100 Black Men organizations canvassed the country.  Dr. Hayling’s vision paved the way for the national organization-100 Black Men of America, Inc.- to be incorporated during Congressional Black Caucus weekend in 1986.  Today, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. represents a world-wide movement of more than 10,000 members and 118 chapters across the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Bahamas.
